Git Contribution Summarizer

Git Contribution Summarizer is a developer tooling project I built from a practical career problem: I needed to explain my yearly work clearly when formal KPI tracking was weak. The tool turns raw commit history into structured contribution narratives for performance reviews, brag docs, and CV material.

The Problem

Engineering work leaves evidence in git history, but extracting clean, readable contribution narratives from busy repositories is tedious and inconsistent when done manually.

The Insight

The useful part was not just asking an LLM to summarize commits. The tool needed reliable repo scanning, author/date filtering, provider flexibility, and a no-LLM fallback so the pipeline remained useful even when model access was limited.

The Solution

I built a Node.js CLI that scans repositories, filters contributions by author and date, gathers commit metadata and diffs, and writes timestamped artifacts such as raw JSON, summary.md, brag.md, cv.md, cv_bullets.md, performance.md, and meta.json. The tool supports provider-agnostic API keys, OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, key rotation, include/exclude filters, output modes, max diff/commit controls, and `--no-llm`. It was used for my Alner performance report and later by teammates for their own reports.
